Job title, the skills that matter, what to leave out. Out come the search strings for LinkedIn, the job boards and Google, with the other titles people use for the same job, and a checker for the strings you already have.

The rules

How it works.

  • LinkedIn and the job boards use AND, OR and NOT in capitals, brackets to group, and quotation marks round a phrase. Titles go in brackets joined by OR; each must-have is joined by AND; the any-of list is one bracket of ORs; exclusions follow a single NOT. LinkedIn's help pages list the same operators. Some boards ignore brackets or NOT; check the board's own search help if the results look wrong.
  • The Google search looks only at public LinkedIn profiles (site:linkedin.com/in). Google treats a space as AND, uses OR in capitals, and a minus sign for NOT. It ignores anything after the 32nd word, and the tool warns when you're near that.
  • Other titles come from a short list we keep of the titles people use for the same job on UK CVs. Click one to add it. The list is a starting point; the most useful titles are the ones your last placements used.
  • The checker finds brackets that don't close, a quotation mark left open, operators in lower case, and an AND, OR or NOT with nothing on one side.

Everything is worked out in your browser. The Google button opens an ordinary Google search in a new tab.
